George M. Kesslere was contracted by F. Ziegfeld for a suite of photographs of the feature performers of the 1921 Follies. It would be his first important publicity assignment in New York City. Kesslere decided to stylize the images in a manner that would set them apart from anything appearing in national magazines. They are dark, with high key contrast, and posed to emphasize sinuous line. He encouraged pronounced expression on the part of the sitters. The photographs of Lucy Day Smith are the best ever taken of this Follies Artist. The Dorothy Dickson image is the best profile head shot ever taken of that transatlantic dancing star.
