Diva Image #4 Anna Held
by David for group historicalziegfeld Oct 11, 2010

Florenz Ziegfeld wanted to make Anna Held as prominent a presence on the American stage as Lillian Russell. His Polish-born Parisian 'wife' did not have the vocal artistry of Russell, but had a mischievous quirky personality. Ziegfeld in the 1890s took Anna Held to every major theatrical photographer in the United States, favoring particularly William Morrison from his native Chicago, Benjamin J. Falk from New York, and Falk's close friend Jacob Schloss (they shared a studio when they first set up business in New York in 1874). Costume dominates these images. Ziegfeld took pains to present Held as an entirely theatrical person, decked in fashion, or period dress. It is rather shocking to see how pedestrian Boston's principle theatrical studio, Chickering, presents Held when compared to Schloss, Morrison, Falk, and Dupont. David S. Shields
