2016 Aug 10: Still more left to add......
2016 July 29: After a two (three?) year hiatus, I finally realized I'd never get all of the old albums from Multiply moved here if I tried to figure out everything in them, about them, and so on.
Those not already in sections below will be posted here in date order. Please remember that ID info - especially for ACJ pics - changed constantly over the years. Use year/date order to figure out which album IDs supersede previous albums.
At some point in time I'll move these somewhere, somehow. I'll also add the original comments - many of which ID'd or corrected ID's and gave much more info at some future date. Hopefully.
Pardon my mess. jane

2006 thru 2011 - Named ACJ Pics (Screencaps) - Please Add Pics
341 photos
These are screengrabs from Historical Ziegfeld on Multiply starting in 2006. I don't have zip files for pics. Someone please add them in whatever way you have numbered or named - many have been renamed many times since the HZ posts.
If you can help please add a comment on this album letting us know you're working on it so there is no duplication of effort. If you help and you don't have authority to upload pics or download zip files of albums here, please contact me.
Note about 'Contact' albums from Multiply: On Multiply, all 'risque' and 'nudes' had to be hidden from the public or a site would be shut down. There was no other reason for having separate 'Contact' albums.
When / If someone adds the pics I'll come back and add the comments.

2011-2013_ACJ Nest Egg Auctions NEA (Partial)
770 photos
1259 photos in 46 sub-albumsI haven't been able to keep up with ACJ pics, ACJ pic IDs over the past years. I'm hoping someone will fill in this album, post additions, make corrections, etc.
Though not noted on very many of these, IDs for the Unknowns and mis-named in the NEA listings are by Vlad with some by Otto. Lots of hard work and incredible research went into them. Thank you!

2007_Sep 18 - ACJs, Ziegfeld Performers & Shows_strether by jane for historicalziegfeld Sep 18, 2007 (HZ Multiply)
These pics are generously donated by strether from his personal collection of rare original photographs. Small sizes and watermarks are necessary so that they don't show up reproduced on eBay for sale. If anyone wants to buy or sell any photos of Ziegfeld productions or stars, please contact me and I'll get you in touch with him.
The pics are in the following order: Alfred Cheney Johnston, Ziegfeld Productions; and finally Ziegfeld Stars in other productions. Just as a side note, Bob had only seen one of these ACJ's before, the Emily Drange, which is in the LOC.
Thanks for sharing these with us, strether! -

2008 - Yumico Mitomi? Zumeco Milomi? Sumiko Suzuki?_jane, vlad, gumlegs
3 photos
Got sidetracked while looking for more info on Mildred Adams in the NEA photos. The Harry Ransom Center in Austin (David will be doing the bios for them) has an inventory list of what is in their Flo Ziegfeld collection. I've added the list of names from the photos in Section 2 below. They may be quite helpful for IDs.
The name " Yumico Mitomi " is on that list of photos. I've posted the photo that has long been unidentified with some "maybe" guesses. Perhaps this is Yumico Mitomi? However, the only thing I found when searching for Yumico Mitomi was on the French Wiki page for Eugenie Clark "The Shark Lady" marine biologist:
Elle est la fille de Charles et d’Yumico née Mitomi. (somewhat: She is the daughter of Charles and Yumico born Mitomi.)
Any ideas on this name for the photo after looking at the scrawled name on the verso?

John Barrymore? Monte Blue? ACJ Still Mystery Discussion Feb 28, '09 4:22 PM
by jane for historicalziegfeld Feb 28, 2009
Please read all comments. David is unsure of the attribution of this photo though it does appear in the LOC ACJ collection but with the actor named as Monte Blue according to Bob's LOC CD. I explain in comments where I got this copy from. I can't remember where the film title came from.
George very thoroughly explains why this is not from Don Juan and instead "...looks more like "The Beloved Rogue" than "Don Juan.""
Please read his full comment for reasons why. I would like agreement on this from someone familiar with Barrymore films... as if George doesn't know??? George knows!
Thanks so much G, and thanks too for your patience :) -

ACJ Pic Mystery Wayne Hitchcock's Great-Grandmother & Ilse Werner?
by jane for historicalziegfeld May 25, 2008
By some freak accident I ran across this postcard of German movie and singing star Ilse Werner (not Jlse) as shown on the card last night. I though huh, this looks like the woman in that ACJ pic zr 019.
Now when the ACJ pic was sold by the very reputable dealer (along with the mannish znr 105 errrr... as Max says "no, just a woman "a la Dorothy Malone" hahaha - ok I've decided to put that pic here too since it has the same headdress) I thought "what a departure for ACJ!" but the znr 019 does have the typical ACJ background.
Now I'm wondering if the first two pics are both of Ilse Werner, why would ACJ be photographing a German star in the 1930s? She was never in the U.S.
Or is his model not Ilse but just a similar looking woman and the photo is in the style of the Ilse photo by Baumann?
I've posted this before sending it separately to Bob and my primary group hoping that people would share their thoughts and opinions here instead of via email. -

The magazine pic shows Helen Lee Worthing, Janet Velie, and..... Nettie Raines? The magazine says she's on Broadway and in films but I have not been able to find any info on a Nettie Raines.
Does anyone know?
That pic is one of the first I got in the upload eons ago and was named just 'knapp' and Dorothy Knapp it's always been. I've included the pic here for reference. -

These are raw, untouched scans. Hope you enjoy them. I can't remember if I ever posted the Queenie Smith scan so I'm posting it just in case I didn't.
I've included the orig of the Sybil Carmen pic that I have named Helen Buck on the other site. Thanks to Vlad for the correction. Whether or not the photo is by ACJ was in question and yes, it is. The sig is embossed in the bottom left hand corner though most of it cropped off as this photo was chopped (I bought it anyway so I could check it). -

by jane for historicalziegfeld Feb 6, 20092016 Aug: I've lost the first posting where the "Unknown Parody" was discussed. I thought it was Charley Chase but apparently I was the only one who thought that. Something about Hank Mann was also talked about. I contacted a person who was expert in such things but he'd never seen the stills before. I thought then - and do now - that they're incredibly funny! Anyone know what they're from? Thanks, jane

Kathie was nice enough to type out info about and the review of this show from "The House of Barrymore" by Margot Peters:
The Jest with Lionel and John Barrymore
by Kathie (kittyinva) Jun 1, 2009
From "The House of Barrymore" by Margot Peters:
"Early in 1919 Ned Sheldon... adapted Sem Benelli's "La Cena della Beffe" for Jack. Set in Florence in the days of the Medici, "The Jest" tells of the terrorizing of an effete young painter, Gianetto Maelspino by the brutal Neri Chiaramentesi and his brother - the timeless conflict of the weakling and the bully. Gianetto had, in fact, been played by a woman onstage, giving point to Neri's taunt, "Are you cock or hen?" Central to the quarrel is Ginevra, Gianetto's betrothed, whom Neri also loves. In the end the persecuted Gianetto manages to turn the tables on his tormentors, causing Neri to kill his own brother and go mad. "The Jest" would reunite Jack and Lionel: the lurid melodrama appealed immensely to both brothers. Rape, blood, lust and murder - "The Jest", said Jack, was like a bullfight in a brothel.
Magnificently set and lit with fire and moonlight, "The Jest" opened on April 9, 1919 and overnight was the sensation of the season, perhaps the decade. 'The Jest has fallen across the sky of the declining season like a burst of sunset color," rhapsodized the New York Times as people stampeded the Plymouth eager to be bathed in the lurid glow. Some were stunned. "My God!" a dazed playgoer was overheard to exclaim at intermission, "I brought my MOTHER and my SISTER to this?"
Everyone felt the physicality of the brothers. Lionel's muscular legs were bare, his arms huge, his heavy sensual face half hidden by long matted hair; for the first time on stage he kissed a woman "long and lingeringly." Jack was aspen-slim but sizzling with sexuality. No woman had ever been costumed more provacatively than this Gianetto; with a crotch swollen by padding and green tights that left nothing to the imagination. Jack made sure artist Gianetto was a cock. Even more sensual was his portrayal of the artist's psyche: Gianetto is a coward who yet gets a voluptuous thrill out of being in personal danger, an effiminate youth who burnt with sexuality. Watching him boil and froth in the presence of his stage lover Ginevra, his wife Blanche suffered the jealousy of the woman who must share her lover with every man and woman in the audience. Jack himself, however, was characteristically flippant about his sex appeal, declaring that in the infamous green tights he resembled nothing more dangerous than "a decadent string bean".
While some argued that the sets and costumes made The Jest a sensation, other claimed it was all Barrymore. Alexander Wollcott, for example, thought the designer's contribution wildly overrated; without the Barrymores The Jest would be "unthinkable"; with the Barrymores it could be played in a high school auditorium and no one would notice the difference. Dorothy Parker agreed. The Barrymores were, indubitably, "quelques family". She had only one piece of advice for those who still had not fallen under their spell: "park the children somewhere, catch the first city-bound train, and go to the Plymouth Theatre, if you have to trade in the baby's Thrift Stamps to buy the tickets...You ought to be able to get nice comfortable standing-room any time after Labor Day."
One standee could have had Booth Tarkington's seat after the first act. "I could write a book about that play and about NY's spasms of ecstacy over it - the paens from the critics," complained Tarkington to John Peter Toobey. "Penrod wrote plots like that - especially the tauntin' of the scoundrel in a celar (sic); and I haven't seen such acting since the old time elocution teacher left the Boy's Classical School in Indianapolis in 1884 to join Jas. C. Milne the preacher-actor. This is confidential however: the Barrymore boys are friends of mine. They have got the innocentest nerve I ever saw and New York is - well, I can hardly bear it alone: you BET it's a Jest!"

2016 Aug: I was very confused :)
Original post:
I'd posted the first pic as being by ACJ with id's (in the Misc Pics by ACJ folder) but then one day a week or so ago, I ran across the next two that I've scanned and added here.
I was stunned when I came across the second image which noted that Bruguiere was the photographer! Someone I'd never heard of and then a few days later in a book purchased, there was the third pic signed by ACJ.
Both the 2nd and 3rd pics seem to have the wrong info in the text portions when it comes to who is who played by who and none of the actors, except for perhaps the actor standing in the first photo, seem to be the same. And I had all the wrong actors noted in the one I'd posted.
There was a revival of this hugely popular Broadway show in 1926 and David told me that Bruguiere did an ACJ homage portrait (similar to the one (or ones) done for the 1919 show) which would be the one shown in the second photo.
I've spent many days, too many days, trying to figure all of this out, looking for more photos by Bruguiere, and for more info on The Jest. I'd appreciate some input on these please, anything!
Is the first by ACJ or by Bruguiere? What year? It appears it may possibly be from a 1926 revival but the actors don't appear to be the same as in The Theatre mag photo to me.
And who is actually who in these?
The only thing that's certain for me right now is that Bruguiere photographed the second image in 1926 and that ACJ photographed the last still in 1919 and that in it is John Barrymore as the painter Giannetto, Maude Hanaford as Generva, and Arthur Forrest as Tornaquinci. -

Who is this? The shoot was performed by Ira L. Hill, New York's major Society photographer during the 1910s. A name is penciled in on one of the images that reads I think "N Payne." Yet the costumes look like they are heavily influenced by the Bakst costumes of the Ballet Russe. The Russian ballet visited NY in 1916. I've done a cursory search of the newspapers for 1916--the date stamped on the back of all the images, and have not discovered an N Payne. Suggestions?

Would you like a Coffin Nail?
by David for group historicalziegfeld Feb 17, 2011
Cigarette cards featuring eye-catching young women became a fixture of the tobacco trade in the 1880s in the United States. The images, formatted small to suit that size of a cigarette pack, became the forte of photographic rip-off artists who would hijack copyrighted images or shoot images of debutantes displayed in society photographers' display cases. Many women conceived a horror at having her picture gazed out by "the vulgarity" who devoured cigarettes. The trade grew so lucrative that certain photographers consented to arrange release of certain of their images for cash, provided no credit appeared. Association with the cigarette crowd was déclassé in the Gilded Age. The chocolate toning of the images below resemble that found in certain theatrical stills by Joseph Byron. But no name credit. No ID of the woman doing the hard sell. And the additional curiosity of being found in the copyright deposit collection of the Library of Congress. Was Byron registering the photos as a strategy for suing someone who might use it thinking it not protected? Then why no identification on the back of the prints? Was Byron thinking of getting into the coffin nail business in scale? Becoming a broker? If so, the venture did not amount to much during the next decade. A mystery. Anyone wish to venture an ID. Nellie Bly
by David for group historicalziegfeld Mar 10, 2011
When considering the great acting performances of the late 19th century, there was one that didn't occur on stage, that may have contributed to more social good than any other in the United States. This occurred when Nellie Bly (pen name of Elizabeth Jane Cochran) feigned madness in order to gain access as a patient to Bellvue Hospital for the Insane in order to report on inmate conditions for Joseph Pulitzer's New York World. The appearance of a beautiful demented woman at the admissions offices was news in itself, with rival newspapers printing "who is this tormented beauty" stories. Bly was subjected to the brutal regimens of control--hours motionless and silent on straight backed wooden benches in unheated rooms--ate the submarginal food and drank the fetid water--witnessed the binding together of distraught patients. After ten days, the New York World intervened, securing her release. Her book TEN DAYS IN A MADHOUSE proved an instant sensation, giving her fame, leading to asylum reform and $850,000 bump in appropriations. An immensely courageous woman, with a lively spirit of adventure, she next proposed to her editors that she attempt to best Phineas Fogg's feat in Jules Verne's Around in the World in 80 Days. She set off in 1889, using existing rail and steamship lines, and performed the circumnavigation in less than 73 days. En route she visited Jules Verne and a Chinese leper colony. Upon her marriage to millionaire manufacturer Robert Seaman in 1895, Bly left reporting. Seaman's death shortly after the wedding left her in charge of the Iron Clad Manufacturing Co., maker of sanitary milk cans and iron storage barrels. She proved an energetic CEO until the company was ruined by an employee's embezzlement. She returned to reporting and made the suffragette movement her favorite subject. She died, aged 57, in 1922. -

by jane for historicalziegfeld Apr 17, 2011
Now that vlad has brought up the question of the last photo actually being of Corinne, I was wondering if everyone could look over the older posted images of her. I'm fairly sure the first was sold as Corinne but have no memory of the middle three.
I now find I am not thrilled with 005b being named as Corinne. Does everyone or anyone think this is her? Not her?
Unfortunately, I have no record of how the rest came to be Corinne.
I started keeping track of who id'd what because an album disappeared and took all of the comments with it that I'd been counting on as a history.
I checked my folder of original images posted on EvilBay by Americana but alas, none of them are in there. I was hoping that these would have partial names included in the pic name as some others did.
If anyone has that info please tell!
Thanks,
jane -

Vivienne Osborne
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0651754/
"A professional dancer from the age of five, actress Vivienne Osborne was still in her ingénue stage when she made her first film in 1920. A handful of movies followed, whereupon Osborne headed for Broadway where she established herself as a versatile leading lady. Returning to films in 1931, she showed up in scores of early-talkie Warner Bros. productions, playing such supporting parts as "other women," femme fatales, and murder suspects. Her finest screen showing was in Paramount's "Supernatural" (1933), as the electrocuted murderess whose spirit possesses the body of innocent Carole Lombard. After busying herself with stage work for nearly five years, Vivienne Osborne made her final foray into filmmaking in 1945; her last screen appearance was as Johanna Van Ryn in 20th Century Fox's "Dragonwyck" (1946).
(c) Hal Erickson, Rovi
http://movies.msn.com/celebrities/celebrity/vivienne-osborne/
"In her final movie, "Dragonwyck" in 1946, Vivienne Osborne was doomed when evil husband Vincent Price gave her a deadly white oleander plant.
Leading lady Osborne worked steadily on stage and in films during a long career.
She was never typecast but was especially good at playing bad girls. She had a "chameleon-like" talent, an RKO studio press release once said.
Osborne was born in Des Moines, reportedly of parents who were not in show business. She apparently was 4 when her parents left Iowa for Spokane, Wash., and by age 5 she began her stage career, working in stock theater in Spokane for five years.
She made her Broadway debut in "The Whirlwind" in 1919 and was in 16 Broadway shows overall, including "Scaramouche" in 1923 and "Aloma of the South Seas" in 1925, of which she also appeared in the London version in 1926.
Back in New York in 1928, she starred in a musical version of "The Three Musketeers" as Lady de Wynter.
Osborne broke into films in 1920 with "In Walked Mary." She was especially busy in 1932, with seven movies, and in 1933, with six films, including "Luxury Liner" and "Sailor Be Good," and her most acclaimed, "Supernatural," also starring Carole Lombard.
The RKO press release from that period described how people could determine the mood of the actress by the way she chewed her gum on the set. If she chewed furiously, her maid called her "Miss Osborne." If she chewed normally, her maid relaxed and called her "Viv."
Osborne married Francis Worthington Hine and lived at 1321 Miller Drive in Hollywood. With about 40 movies to her credit, Osborne faded from the scene. She died at Malibu, Calif., and is buried at Valhalla Memorial Park in North Hollywood, Calif."

RUMOR DECLARES HER "MISS AMERICA 1925"

MISS NEW YORK
Miss Beatrice Roberts, "Miss New York," who represented the Greater City in the National Beauty Pageant at Atlantic City last week, was awarded the middle cup in the photo for being the most beautiful girl in an evening gown. The cup on the left was won for the best appearance in the Roller Chair Parade, while the one on the right for being the most beautiful girl in the New York-New England division. The flowers are from the Philadelphia Boosters Club. These honors will make amends for losing the Miss America title. Miss Roberts was Miss Manhattan in 1924. I was going to post an album for this but with the problems, I'll wait till tomorrow. In the Contacts album for Named ACJ pics there are three ID'd as Virginia Pearson:
http://ziegfeldgrrl.multiply.com/photos/album/118/Named_ACJ_Pics_Contacts
Last night ka59 posted one of those images for sale on evilbay as being Margaret Horan.
I PM'd him and asked if he had anything that said it was Margaret and he said that he had another in that shoot that had her name and Greenwich Village Follies written on the back.
I told him that if that was Margaret Horan I'd eat a bug (didn't say how large of a bug :) and that perhaps it is Madelon La Varre (aka Madeline) who had a minor part in that film.
Please check the "Virginia Pearson" ID'd pics (is not her IMO). Not Margaret Horan who was a model and not in GV Follies. For that pic to be her she'd had to have had a nose job later on.
Also please look at the Madelon La Varre images (might as well take a look at Madrienne La Barre as well).
Will post an album for all this tomorrow and hopefully people will be able to open it!!!
Thanks,

Can't post the question as an album yet. Spoke with ka59 about his listing of one of them as Margaret Horan and got a response. Surely not Margaret or Virginia... perhaps Madelon La Varre?

I insist, for the few images that I saw could be Mary Anderson (big eyes, lips ...)

Thanks so much, Otto. Since I can't seem to post an album on the other site for Contacts that Contacts can view, I'll post an album on here for members with all pics I have of the Pearson pics in question, the Mary Anderson and Madelon La Varre pics.
Then perhaps a discussion can get going there on this.ohikkoshi wrote on Jul 29, '11
Ladies and Gentlemens, we have four versions for these zrs.
ka59:
Margaret Horan.
"ka59...he said that he had another in that shoot that had her name and Greenwich Village Follies written on the back..."
http://ziegfeldgrrl.multiply.com/journal/item/475
Jane, Joan Crawford in the early 20s and mid 30s... She seemed like two, three or even four different women.
Margaret Horan in 1923 and in 1931... Wasn't she too young in 1922-1923? :)
Jane:
Madelon La Varre?

Too pixie, too light haired. More than doubtful.

When it comes to "Rosita" of the Rosita & Ramon dance team there appears to be no end to the confusing and incorrect info online. Hopefully this is the correct info and will clear up some of the confusion and not make it worse :)
Rosita was the dance partner of Ramon (Reachi) in the 1920s until about 1935. They were called, aptly enough, Ramon & Rosita. In 1935, Rosita sued Ramon for using another woman to dance with him in the film Gold Diggers of 1935 because he also called that woman Rosita. That's why neither Ramon nor 'Rosita' were credited.
Ref:
http://www.weirdwildrealm.com/f-golddiggers1935.html
IMDB incorrectly lists Gold Diggers of 1935 in Rosita's filmography:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0743037/
and also incorrectly lists Ramon's given name as Ramon Del Castillo Palop:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0708464/
Rosita left Ramon Reachi behind and started another dance team with Georges Fontana, aptly called Rosita & Fontana. They performed together in the 1936 film "I'm Much Obliged."
Georges Fontana:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0284874/
I still have no idea who this Rosita really was. I have not been able to find any info on her given name or birth date yet.
Does anyone know?
Ramon Reachi's obituary in the LA Times identifies the woman who Ramon danced with in Gold Diggers of 1935 as Renita:
http://articles.latimes.com/1990-06-27/local/me-500_1_santa-monica-restaurant
Renita's given name was Amy Sureau. Two genealogy refs:

http://fatherdaughterdance.dancecolleges.org/2011/02/17/memorial-to-peter-camile-sureau/
and IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0839575/

Another Ramon and another Rosita starred in the 1930 Spanish version of Paramount on Parade (Galas De La Paramount). They were Ramon Pereda and Rosita Moreno:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1458557/fullcredits#cast
Rosita Moreno IBDB (no credits):
http://www.ibdb.com/person.php?id=105644
as Rosita Morena IBDB (Pleasure Bound 1929):
http://www.ibdb.com/production.php?id=10851
Rosita Moreno IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0604174/
-------------
Eva Rosita performed uncredited in Rio Rita (1930):
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0743039/

Spanish dancers were so in vogue that the LA Times did a full page on them in 1927 (included here with a crop of Rosita Alvarado with Don Marquis). -

Three groups of Fowlers. Clarification, info most welcomed as always. Addison Fowler with first wife: ZF Midnight Frolic; Addison Fowler and Florenz Tamara (not in ZF... so far); and Harriett Fowler (Waldron): 1923 ZF Follies.
1. The Fowlers (Mr. & Mrs. Addison Fowler): 1918 ZF Midnight Frolic. Divorced in 1920, Mrs. Fowler resumed using her former name, Mrs. Ethyle Stewart. No other info found on "Mrs. Ethyle Stewart."
======
2. Harriett Fowler (Waldron): 1923-1924 ZF Follies. According to according to 1975 news articles, she was on program as "Harriett" only and later became a famous dancer in Paris.
IBDB has her as Harriet Fowler, not just "Harriett." Not listed in 1924 Follies on IBDB. Don't have 1923 program to check and she doesn't appear in the ZF Follies theatre program of Feb 18, 1924.
Famous dancer in Paris in late 1920s? No info. Perhaps incorrectly referring to Tamara of Fowler and Tamara?
