Will Rogers for President, Life Magazine_gumlegs May 12, '09 1:57 PM

Strictly as a joke, Will Rogers ran for President in 1928. Neither Hoover nor Smith appeared to be unduly upset by the challenge from the great comedian, although thoughts of his VP may have caused a few sleepless nights around the nation.

Life Magazine, then a humorous weekly, provided Rogers with an outlet for his jokes about the topics of the day. Below are four covers spanning the campaign, plus two interior pages from the June 7th issue.

His concession telegram on the cover of the Nov. 2nd issue neatly stands Henry Clay's famous declaration, "I'd rather be right than be President!" on its head.

The photo of the Vice Presidential nominees is included to demonstrate no matter how outlandish the joke, in real life the joke's invariably on us.
