Evelyn Nesbit & Ida Gabrielle
by David for group historicalziegfeld May 31, 2012

In 1902 starlet Ida Gabrielle seemed among the freshest and most insouciant of the chorines elevated to feature roles in musicals. A brash fun-loving girl with a talent for doing pants roles though she looked "all girl" she was known for impromptu routines backstage. While playing "Rafael" in the musical "The Wild Rose," she grabbed her buddy Evelyn Nesbit--a brunette beauty who would in a short time become the most notorious creature on Broadway for a dance routine in costume that seemed so charming it was incorporated into the production. Benjamin "Jake" Falk captured it in his studio and we see two spirited gal pals of the turn of the century stage work their magic for the camera. Nesbit's dancing skills were modest at this juncture in her career. During the next decade, after the tragedy of the Thaw murder of White, she studied dance intensively and toured in a professional partnership. (See my earlier Nesbit posting.) David S. Shields
