Stars of 1904
by David for group historicalziegfeld Feb 25, 2011

Perhaps 1904 will be remembered in stage history for two things. It marked the American debut of Enrico Caruso. It was the last year in the American Theater when Shakespearean productions loomed large among the most reputable performances of the season. Comic operas and operettas drew great crowds. One had to look to "The Virginian," a western, for American fare. Here are the major performers of the year in the eyes of Theatre magazine--the ones that merited full page pictorial treatment. They ranged from songstresses Lulu Glaser and Fritzi Scheff to tragedians Julia Marloe and Edward Sothern. The most riveting image, however, is that of the young Caruso. A magnetic presence physically before he began adding poundage. David S. Shields
