Lee & Jacob Shubert took over the name of the oldest (1894) American revue in 1912 to stage a rival to the Ziegfeld Follies. Housed at the Winter Garden Theater, the annual cavalcade of skits, chorus girls, parodies, and songs rarely pretended to plot; Harold Atteridge, the Shuberts' resident librettist cobbled a pretext for the evening's incidents. The Passing Revue may have lacked the design integrity of the Follies or the novelty, but certain of the Shows possessed better hit songs (by Romberg and Gershwin), dancing by Fred & Adele Astaire, the antics of female comedians Marie Dressler and Charlotte Greenwood, and the humor of Willie & Eugene Howard (see the drag burlesque of Trilby below). Some of the Shuberts showgirls proved so alluring--Jessie Reed & Marilyn Miller for instance--that Ziegfeld poached them for the Follies. Ed Wynn, too, would be secured by Ziegfeld for certain of his productions, though the two men were both too much control freaks, to get along. Most of these images derive from the 1916, 1918, and 1921 versions of The Show. I've secured certain of the rare stage pictures as well as group portraits of the Squab Farm Girls, the Spanish Love Girls, and the Show chorus. The Shuberts regularly employed White Studio to record their efforts, but brought in Apeda for performer portraits. The Shuberts suspend the Shows in the mid-1920s when the revue suffered from over proliferation on Broadway. Masters of the conventional, the Shuberts never managed the avant guarde edginess of the Greenwich Village Follies under John Murray Anderson, the musical excellence of George White's Scandals, or the aesthetic tact of the Ziegfeld Follies, or the nudity of the Vanities. It was the most middlebrow of the revues and ultimately suffered from its modesty of aspiration. Profdash David S. Shields
